How a strategic spin-off reshaped the Canadian media landscape
In short: In 1999, a major telecom giant decided to separate its media assets to satisfy regulators. This move created Corus Entertainment, a powerhouse that would eventually absorb massive broadcasting networks and animation studios to dominate Canadian television and radio.
Corus Entertainment was established in 1999 as a spin-off from Shaw Communications. The separation was a strategic response to recommendations from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), which sought to discourage the vertical integration of broadcasters and telecommunications providers. While the new company was publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange, it remained under the primary control of the Shaw family.
The company's growth was defined by aggressive acquisitions and strategic shifts. In 2000, Corus spent $540 million to acquire the Toronto-based animation studio Nelvana, a move intended to complement its existing children's networks like YTV and Treehouse. By 2016, Corus completed a transformational $2.65 billion acquisition of Shaw Media. This deal brought the Global network and 19 specialty channels—including Food Network and HGTV—under its umbrella, effectively redefining the Canadian media landscape.
However, the company's portfolio has been subject to significant shifts. In 2025, Corus is expected to see the movement of lifestyle brands like Food Network and HGTV to Rogers Communications, while Nickelodeon distribution rights shift to Paramount+. Earlier, in 2016, Corus closed Movie Central and Encore Avenue to focus on mainstream specialty channels, a transition that involved a $211 million payment from Bell Media to assist with subscriber migration.
Today, Corus maintains a massive presence through the Global network, 36 radio stations, and 25 specialty television services. Its portfolio includes diverse brands such as Showcase, Slice, and Télétoon, alongside licensing agreements with major global entities like The Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery.
