The Independent Republic: How isolation shaped a coastal county's identity
In short: Before it was a global tourism hub, Horry County was a secluded wilderness so isolated by swamps and rivers that residents declared it an "Independent Republic." This geographic solitude forged a fiercely independent culture that persists even as the region transforms into a modern coastal powerhouse.
Founded in 1801 and named for Revolutionary War Brigadier General Peter Horry, the county began as a small community of just 550 people. Its early identity was defined by its physical geography. Surrounded by dense swamps, rivers, and the ocean, the area was so geographically isolated that it was colloquially referred to as the "Independent Republic." This seclusion even made it a haven for pirates, including the notorious Blackbeard, who infested the inlets near Little River in the early 18th century.
The region's economy was historically shaped by its natural resources. The Waccamaw River served as a vital transportation lifeline, enabling the production of rice, turpentine, and timber. During the 1600s, the territory hosted indigo and rice farms, kept apart from nearby colonial outposts by surrounding wetlands. While the county remained rural and agrarian for centuries, the arrival of the railroad in late 1887 began to break this seclusion, eventually paving the way for the construction boom of the 1970s and 1980s.
Today, Horry County is the largest county in South Carolina by land area, covering approximately 1,134 to 1,254 square miles. It has transitioned from a quiet agrarian community into a major tourist destination, home to the internationally famous Myrtle Beach. Even with such vast expansion—the inhabitants quadrupling since 1970—the district preserves its heritage, remaining South Carolina's sole Certified Local Government for its historic property surveys.
