The South African southpaw who shocked the world with a single straight left
In short: Corrie Sanders was a heavyweight boxer whose career was defined by formidable knockout power and one of the greatest upsets in the sport's history. Known as The Sniper, he famously dismantled Wladimir Klitschko in two rounds, leaving a legacy of power that even his toughest opponents struggled to comprehend.
Born in Brits, South Africa, in 1966, Cornelius Johannes Sanders emerged from a background in rugby, cricket, and golf to become a dominant amateur boxer. Before turning professional in 1989, he secured 180 amateur victories. His professional career was marked by a devastating straight left hand, a weapon that helped him secure 31 knockouts across 42 career wins. Throughout the 1990s, he built a reputation as a dangerous contender, holding the South African and WBU heavyweight titles while defeating notable fighters like Johnny Nelson and Bobby Czyz.
The defining moment of his career occurred on 8 March 2003, in Hanover, Germany. Entering the ring as a 40-1 underdog against Wladimir Klitschko, Sanders delivered a stunning performance, dropping the champion four times to win the WBO heavyweight title in just two rounds. The Ring magazine named the bout the Upset of the Year. Klitschko later reflected on the encounter, stating that in 25 years of boxing, he had never faced anyone who punched like Sanders. Despite this success, Sanders later vacated the title to challenge Vitali Klitschko in 2004, a fight Vitali described as the hardest of his career.
Sanders' life ended in tragedy on 22 September 2012. While attending a family function at a restaurant in Brits, he was fatally wounded during an armed robbery. Witnesses reported that Sanders used his own body to shield his 15-year-old daughter from gunfire before succumbing to his injuries the following morning. In 2015, three men were sentenced to 43 years' imprisonment for their roles in the robbery and murder. Beyond his boxing accolades, Sanders remains remembered for his immense power and the final act of protection that defined his character.
