The Texas stadium that grew to accommodate a single superstar
In short: In the late 1940s, SMU running back Doak Walker was so popular that the Cotton Bowl had to physically expand. His massive crowds transformed the venue from a modest facility into a double-decked arena, earning the stadium a nickname that survives to this day.
Opened in 1930 as Fair Park Stadium, the venue underwent significant architectural shifts to keep pace with the popularity of SMu's Doak Walker. To accommodate the crowds drawn by the star halfback, a second deck was added to the west side in 1948, increasing capacity to 67,000, followed by the double-decking of the east side in 1949 to reach 75,504 spectators. This era of expansion gave rise to the stadium's nickname, "The House That Doak Built."
The stadium's history is a tapestry of diverse sporting eras. It has hosted the Dallas Cowboys from 1960 to 1971 and served as a venue for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. To meet FIFA's requirements for that tournament, the stadium underwent significant changes, including widening the field and re-installing natural grass after years of using AstroTurf from 1970 to 1993.
Beyond college football, the venue has seen high-stakes professional matchups, such as the 1966 NFL Championship Game between the Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers. It also hosted the 2020 NHL Winter Classic, which saw over 85,000 fans attend a match between the Dallas Stars and the Nashville Predators. Today, the stadium remains a central fixture of the State Fair of Texas, hosting the intense Red River Rivalry between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns.
The venue's capacity has fluctuated wildly due to renovations and varying tenant needs. While it once held up to 75,504, modern expansions—including a massive $140 million renovation announced in 2023—have aimed to modernize the aging structure while maintaining its role as a premier Texas sporting destination.
