The resilient defender who returned to the pitch the day his father died
In short: In 1998, a 17-year-old Cristian Chivu faced a devastating personal loss. Instead of retreating, he stepped onto the pitch the very next day to score for CSM Reșița. This resilience defined a career that would eventually lead him to the heights of European football and the managerial dugout.
Born in Reșița, Romania, on 26 October 1980, Chivu’s journey from local club CSM Reșița to the pinnacle of European football is marked by extraordinary grit. After his father, coach Mircea Chivu, passed away on 31 March 1998, the teenager returned to professional play immediately, scoring a penalty in a 5–1 victory over Ceahlăul Piatra Neamț. This early strength foreshadowed a career defined by high-stakes competition and physical endurance.
Chivu’s ascent saw him move from Universitatea Craiova to the Dutch giants Ajax in 1999 for a $2.2 million fee. At Ajax, he became a decorated captain, winning the 2001–02 Double and earning individual honors including the 2002 Dutch Golden Shoe. His reputation as a reliable fullback and free-kick specialist led to an €18 million transfer to AS Roma in 2003. During his time in Rome, he faced intense competition for his spot and contributed to significant domestic successes, including winning the Coppa Italia in the 2006–07 season.
His most decorated period came with Inter Milan, where he was part of the historic 2010 Treble, winning the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League. Even after suffering a skull fracture in January 2010 that required two hours of surgery, he returned to action by March to help secure those trophies, wearing a distinctive protective headgear for the remainder of his career. After retiring from playing in 2014, Chivu transitioned into coaching, eventually managing Parma and later returning to Inter Milan as head coach in June 2025.
