In short: Cultural hegemony suggests that the ruling class maintains power not just through force, but by making its worldview seem like the natural, inevitable way things are. This subtle shaping of shared beliefs can make challenging the status quo feel unnatural or even unthinkable.

Cultural hegemony, a concept rooted in Marxist philosophy, describes how a dominant class shapes a society’s culture—its values, beliefs, and accepted norms—until its worldview appears to be the universal standard. This dominant ideology presents the social, political, and economic status quo as inherently natural, masking the fact that these structures are artificial constructs serving only the ruling group. The goal is to secure the agreement of subordinate groups regarding the existing social order, thereby reducing the need for constant physical coercion.

This concept differs from cultural imperialism, which refers to social control exerted by an external society. Furthermore, the term 'hegemony' itself traces back to the Ancient Greek word *hegemonia*, signifying leadership. In geopolitics, it describes dominance where a leading state controls subordinate ones through the implied threat of intervention, rather than outright military occupation or annexation.

Antonio Gramsci provided a crucial framework for resisting this dominance, distinguishing between a 'war of manœuvre' and a 'war of position.' The war of position is an intellectual and cultural battle where anti-capitalist revolutionaries must build a proletarian culture. This process involves developing a native value system that directly counters the bourgeoisie's cultural hegemony. This cultural work aims to boost class consciousness and teach revolutionary theory, which is necessary before the political action of the war of manœuvre can begin.

To counteract this, the working-class intelligentsia must educate the working classes to see that prevailing cultural norms are not inevitable. They must analyze how institutions—such as the state, church, or social strata—and conventions function as instruments of socio-economic domination. Louis Althusser further detailed this by describing Ideological State Apparatuses (ISA) as the numerous sites where the dominant ideology is transmitted, contrasting them with the more overt Repressive State Apparatuses (RSA) like the military.
