In short: Joseph Curtis Hennig, known in WWE as Curtis Axel, spent over a decade in the ring. After a career-defining Royal Rumble moment where he was never officially eliminated, he launched the AxelMania campaign, claiming he was the true winner and demanding a title shot at WrestleMania 31.

Born into a wrestling dynasty as the son of Curt Hennig and grandson of Larry Hennig, Joseph Curtis Hennig began his professional journey in 2007. Initially performing under his own name in developmental territories, he eventually adopted the moniker Michael McGillicutty. During this period, he became a prominent member of the faction known as The Nexus, which dominated WWE storylines in 2010 and 2011. His time with the group saw him secure the WWE Tag Team Championship alongside David Otunga, marking a significant early achievement in his main roster career.

In 2013, he rebranded as Curtis Axel, a tribute to his father and grandfather, and immediately captured the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Despite this success, his career was marked by shifting alliances and creative pivots. Perhaps his most memorable narrative occurred in 2015, when he failed to enter the Royal Rumble match due to an attack by Erick Rowan. Because he was never officially eliminated, Axel began a persistent, humorous campaign asserting his status as the rightful winner, which culminated in his participation in the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 31.

Axel’s later years in WWE saw him join forces with Bo Dallas to form The B-Team. The duo captured the Raw Tag Team Championship in 2018, holding the titles for 50 days before their eventual split. Following his release in 2020 and a brief stint as a producer in 2022, Hennig returned to the independent wrestling circuit in 2025. Beyond the ring, his career included film roles, video game appearances, and a notable presence on the gaming channel UpUpDownDown, reflecting the diverse path of a legacy performer navigating the complexities of modern professional wrestling.
