In short: Hank Henshaw was once a simple astronaut whose life was shattered by a solar flare. After his body deteriorated, he transformed into a vengeful energy being. By merging his consciousness with Kryptonian technology and Superman's own genetic material, he became the Cyborg Superman, a relentless technomorph capable of controlling any machine.

The character of Hank Henshaw debuted in The Adventures of Superman #465 in April 1990. Created by Dan Jurgens, the original story functioned as a dark homage to the Fantastic Four, where a crew of astronauts suffers a catastrophic mutation from cosmic radiation. While the Fantastic Four found heroism in their transformation, Jurgens intended Henshaw’s path to be one of profound tragedy. This origin was later revisited in the 1999 crossover Superman/Fantastic Four, where Henshaw briefly stood in for Mister Fantastic.

Henshaw’s evolution into a villain is rooted in his irrational resentment toward Superman, whom he blames for the death of his wife and crew. Following his own physical collapse, he utilized the birthing matrix that once carried the infant Superman to construct a new, synthetic body. This form, composed of organic Kryptonian matter and advanced cybernetics, allowed him to impersonate the hero after Superman’s death at the hands of Doomsday. His powers go beyond simple mechanical manipulation; as a technomorph, he can inhabit and command any machine, including complex power rings and their energy batteries.

The character’s history has been subject to multiple reboots and reinterpretations. In the 2011 The New 52 continuity, the mantle of Cyborg Superman was briefly reassigned to Zor-El, Superman’s uncle, who was reconfigured by Brainiac. However, the 2016 DC Rebirth relaunch restored the original Hank Henshaw narrative, albeit with a darker turn involving the suicide of his wife. Across various media, from the 2015 Supergirl series to animated films and video games, Henshaw remains a persistent threat, often serving as a dark mirror to the Man of Steel’s legacy.

Beyond his rivalry with Superman, Henshaw has functioned as a galactic menace, notably leading the Manhunters and joining the Sinestro Corps. His motivations have ranged from seeking peace through death at the hands of the Anti-Monitor to orchestrating mass destruction. Whether he is battling the Silver Surfer in multiversal crossovers or clashing with the Terminator, Henshaw remains a complex study of how grief and technology can be weaponized against a hero.
