From Zero Points to Top Ten: The Czech Republic's Eurovision Rollercoaster Journey
In short: The Czech Republic's history in Eurovision is a study in persistence. After a rocky debut and a multi-year hiatus due to low public interest, the nation transformed its selection process. From internal picks to online national finals, the country eventually broke its streak of semi-final exits to secure historic top-ten finishes.
The Czech Republic, known as Czechia since 2023, first entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007. The early years were marked by significant struggle; the country failed to qualify for the final in its first three attempts. The 2009 entry, Gipsy.cz, famously received zero points from the twenty voting countries in their semi-final, a result that contributed to the broadcaster, Czech Television (ČT), withdrawing from the contest entirely between 2010 and 2014.
Following a return in 2015, the nation gradually refined its approach. A major turning point occurred in 2018 when Mikolas Josef, despite suffering a severe back injury during rehearsals, secured the country's first-ever top-ten finish with a sixth-place result. This success validated the use of a national selection model, which combined online public voting with international juries. This format helped propel subsequent acts like Lake Malawi and Vesna to the final, with Vesna achieving the country's second top-ten placement in 2023.
The selection process has remained fluid, oscillating between internal choices and public-facing national finals. While the 2026 entry by Daniel Žižka successfully reached the final, placing 16th despite technical difficulties, the broadcaster's commitment has been dictated by both performance and fiscal reality. In October 2026, ČT announced it would skip the 2027 contest, citing budget constraints. Throughout its fourteen appearances, the Czech journey highlights the complex balance between artistic ambition, public engagement, and the logistical demands of representing a nation on the Eurovision stage.
