North Macedonia's Eurovision journey: from naming disputes to a record-breaking seventh place finish
In short: Since its 1998 debut, North Macedonia has navigated complex political naming disputes and shifting qualification rules to find its place on the Eurovision stage. Despite financial hurdles and a multi-year hiatus, the nation's history in the contest reflects a persistent effort to represent its culture within the European broadcasting community.
North Macedonia's involvement with the European Broadcasting Union began in 1993, granting the broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television eligibility to enter the Eurovision Song Contest. The nation officially joined the competition during the 1998 event with Vlado Janevski. Prior to independence in 1991, the regional affiliate RTV Skopje participated in Yugoslavian pre-selections, though the region never successfully sent an entry to the main Eurovision stage during the Yugoslav era.
The country's participation was long defined by the Macedonia naming dispute, which forced the use of the provisional title F.Y.R. Macedonia until 2019. That year marked a turning point when the nation, now competing as North Macedonia, achieved its highest result ever. Tamara Todevska’s performance of Proud secured seventh place in the final and won the jury vote, representing the country's first top-ten finish. Before this, the best result was Elena Risteska’s 12th-place finish in 2006 with Ninanajna.
Qualification has been a persistent challenge. Between 2004 and 2007, the country held a unique record by qualifying from every semi-final round, a streak that ended in 2008 due to jury voting adjustments. Following two consecutive non-qualifications in 2021 and 2022, the broadcaster cited financial constraints as the reason for withdrawing from the contest between 2023 and 2026. However, official plans are now in place for a return to the competition in 2027, with the event scheduled to take place in neighbouring Bulgaria.
