From Harry Potter's lift to leading roles, Daisy Haggard's quiet rise to comedy stardom
In short: Born into a lineage of artists and directors, Daisy Haggard carved her own path through British television. From early voice work in blockbuster franchises to creating and starring in her own acclaimed series, she has become a versatile fixture of modern comedy-drama, balancing sharp writing with nuanced, heartfelt performances.
Born on March 22, 1978, Daisy Haggard is the daughter of film director Piers Haggard and painter Anna Sklovsky. Her artistic pedigree is extensive; she is the granddaughter of actor Stephen Haggard and a relative of the author Sir Henry Rider Haggard. Despite her father's initial reluctance for her to pursue acting, she made her debut in 1996 in an episode of The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, which her father directed. She later refined her craft at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Haggard's career is marked by a blend of voice acting, stage work, and television comedy. She provided the voice for the Ministry Lift in two Harry Potter films and voiced Johanna in the animated series Hilda from 2018 to 2023. Her television presence grew through roles in BBC sitcoms like Uncle and Episodes, as well as appearances in Black Mirror and Doctor Who. Her stage work includes performances at the National Theatre and the Almeida Theatre, where she played the title character in Becky Shaw.
A significant turning point in her career came with the creation of the BBC Three comedy-drama Back to Life, which she co-wrote with Laura Solon. Premiering in 2019, the series showcased her ability to lead and craft complex narratives. Her performance in the FX series Breeders earned her a British Academy Television Award nomination for Best Comedy Actress in 2021. Looking ahead, Haggard continues to expand her creative footprint, with plans to direct and co-star in the 2025 Channel 4 thriller series Maya alongside Bella Ramsey.
