How a former linebacker became one of the most prolific tight ends in NFL history

Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dallas Clark was a multi-sport athlete in high school before joining the University of Iowa in 1999. Initially playing as a linebacker, he recorded six tackles during his first active season in 2000. The coaching staff moved him to tight end in 2001, a decision that proved pivotal. By 2002, he was a unanimous All-American and the recipient of the John Mackey Award, having helped lead the Hawkeyes to their first undefeated conference season in 80 years.
Selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft, Clark quickly became a cornerstone of their offense. His career reached a zenith in 2009, when he recorded 100 receptions for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns, becoming only the second tight end in NFL history to reach the 100-catch milestone in a single season. His performance against the Miami Dolphins that year, where he tallied 183 receiving yards, remains the fourth-highest single-game total for a tight end in league history.
Beyond his statistical achievements, Clark was instrumental in the Colts' success, including their victory in Super Bowl XLI. In 2008, he signed a six-year extension that made him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL at the time. After stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Baltimore Ravens, he signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Indianapolis Colts in 2014. His legacy was further cemented in 2024 when he was honored during his Ring of Honor weekend.
