In short: A chance encounter with a casting leaflet transformed a Scottish barmaid into an international star. Since her 1996 debut in Trainspotting, Kelly Macdonald has navigated everything from period dramas and HBO crime epics to the magical halls of Hogwarts.

Kelly Macdonald’s career began with a stroke of serendipity in Glasgow. While working as a barmaid, she spotted an advertisement for an open audition for Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. This led to her film debut playing Diane, a role that launched her into the spotlight alongside Ewan McGregor.

Her versatility has allowed her to move seamlessly between genres and mediums. On television, she earned a Primetime Emmy for her performance in the BBC film The Girl in the Cafe (2005) and received an Emmy nomination for her role as Margaret Thompson in the Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire, which ran from 2010 to 2014. Her film credits are equally varied, ranging from playing an aristocrat's maid in Gosford Park (2001) to voicing the spirited Princess Merida in Disney Pixar’s Brave (2012).

Macdonald has also become a recognizable figure in major franchises. She stepped into the Harry Potter universe in 2011, portraying the Grey Lady, also known as Helena Ravenclaw. Beyond live-action, her work extends to radio dramas, such as the 1999 BBC production Lifehouse, and high-profile anthology series like Black Mirror.

Despite the glamour of international awards, including a BAFTA and four Screen Actors Guild Awards, Macdonald maintains deep roots in Scotland. Born in Glasgow in 1976 and raised in nearby Neilston, she attended Eastwood High School, where a theatre and drama studio now bear her name in recognition of her achievements.
