From homeless bouncer to World Heavyweight Champion at WrestleMania XL
In short: Before he was a cornerstone of WWE's Judgment Day, Luis Martínez faced a far from glamorous reality. After moving from Puerto Rico to New York, the future professional wrestling star spent time working as a bouncer and experiencing homelessness, a stark contrast to his eventual ascent to championship glory.
Born in New York City to a Nuyorican family, Luis Martínez was raised in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. His path to the ring was paved by martial arts; he learned Gōjū-ryū karate from his father and successfully won two national championships in full-contact martial arts before transitioning to professional wrestling. This athletic foundation proved vital as he navigated a difficult period of cultural adaptation after returning to the United States at age ten, living primarily in The Bronx.
Martínez's professional journey is marked by diverse tenures across major promotions. He began competing on the East Coast independent circuit in 2005, later joining Ring of Honor in 2015 under the name Punishment Martinez. Following his 2021 NXT North American Championship win in WWE's developmental system, he transitioned to the main roster. His career reached a significant milestone when he became the second man in history to successfully cash in a contract at WrestleMania XL, subsequently winning the World Heavyweight Championship.
His versatility is further evidenced by his success in various formats. He was a co-founding member of the faction The Judgment Day between 2022 and 2024. In this era, he and former stablemate Finn Bálor became the sole duo to twice secure both the Raw and SmackDown Tag Team Titles while under the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship banner. This rise from independent promotions and developmental roles to global stardom highlights a career defined by resilience and technical evolution.
