In short: Before fighting on the world's biggest MMA stage, Ronaldo Rodríguez was working construction and selling freezies to survive. In a city heavily influenced by organized crime, the Mexican martial artist credits karate with providing a path away from a life of crime.

Born in Jiquipilas, Chiapas, on May 7, 1999, Luis Ronaldo Rodríguez spent his childhood in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz. This region is heavily influenced by organized crime, a reality Rodríguez says he avoided by immersing himself in karate. To fund his move to Mexico City to pursue mixed martial arts, he worked as a construction worker and sold freezies to make ends meet.

A technical knockout marked the start of his professional career on March 19, 2017. He quickly found success, securing eight wins in his next nine fights, including five victories within the Jasaji Fighting League (JFL), where he became a two-time JFL Bantamweight Champion. He also competed in LUX Fight League, Mexico's premier MMA promotion, where he secured several notable victories, including a win via rear-naked choke against Jaime Londoño in December 2022.

Rodríguez's journey to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) included a setback on Dana White's Contender Series in August 2020, where he lost to Jerome Rivera by unanimous decision. However, he eventually signed with the UFC, making his promotional debut in February 2024 against Denys Bondar, winning via second-round rear-naked choke.

Recent struggles with weight have shaped his career trajectory. Rodríguez weighed 127 pounds for his March 2025 match against Kevin Borjas, exceeding the non-title flyweight limit by one pound. This resulted in a catchweight bout and a 20% salary penalty paid to Borjas. Consequently, in August 2025, Rodríguez announced his departure from the flyweight division to compete in a different weight class.
