In short: Before the bantamweight division became a staple of the UFC, Urijah Faber was fighting to prove that smaller fighters belonged on the big stage. A former WEC featherweight champion and NCAA wrestler, Faber’s relentless style and technical skill helped transform the landscape of modern mixed martial arts.

Urijah Faber, born May 14, 1979, in Isla Vista, California, transitioned from an NCAA wrestler to a dominant force in mixed martial arts. He rose to prominence in the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) promotion, where he captured the featherweight championship on March 17, 2006, by defeating Cole Escovedo. Faber held this title for over two and a half years before losing it to Mike Brown on November 5, 2008. He first made his professional debut in 2003 through the Gladiator Challenge promotion. During that initial outing, he secured a victory via a guillotine choke.

Faber's career was defined by his versatility, combining his wrestling base with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, earning a brown belt under Fábio "Pateta" Prado. He became a multi-title holder, at one point simultaneously holding the King of the Cage Bantamweight title and the Gladiator Challenge Bantamweight title. His influence extended beyond the cage as the founder of Team Alpha Male and through his role as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter: Live.

The fighter’s impact was recognized by his peers and the industry alike; following his retirement on July 6, 2017, he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame as part of the Modern-era wing. Even after stepping away from professional competition, Faber demonstrated his enduring skill by returning to the cage in 2019, securing a first-round TKO victory against Ricky Simón. His legacy is further cemented by his diverse competitive history across multiple weight divisions. He successfully competed in both the featherweight and bantamweight classes within the UFC.
