Dante Bichette defined the Blake Street Bombers era of Colorado Rockies baseball history
In short: Before retiring in 2002, Dante Bichette became a cornerstone of the Colorado Rockies, anchoring the legendary Blake Street Bombers lineup. A four-time All-Star, he dominated offensive categories in the mid-1990s, leaving a lasting mark on the franchise through his power hitting, historic walk-off moments, and eventual transition into professional coaching.
Drafted by the California Angels in 1984, Bichette spent his early career finding his rhythm before joining the expansion Colorado Rockies in 1993. He quickly became a central figure in Denver, hitting the team's first-ever home run during their inaugural season. By 1995, Bichette reached his professional peak, leading the National League in key power metrics including home runs and total bases, while topping the entire MLB in hits and runs batted in. He finished a close second in the Most Valuable Player voting that year, narrowly missing a Triple Crown season.
Bichette was a key member of the Blake Street Bombers, a group of sluggers that included Larry Walker and Andrés Galarraga. His 1996 campaign was particularly notable; he joined the exclusive 30-30 club by recording at least 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a single season. Beyond his regular-season success, he demonstrated a flair for the dramatic, including hitting a 14th-inning walk-off home run at Coors Field in 1995 and becoming the first player to hit for the cycle during an interleague game in 1998.
Following his departure from Colorado in 1999, Bichette played for the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, and briefly the Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring in 2002. He later returned to the game as a coach, serving the Rockies and eventually the Toronto Blue Jays, where he worked alongside his son, Bo. His influence extends to the next generation, as both of his sons, Dante Jr. and Bo, pursued professional baseball careers. In 2017, his contributions to the sport were recognized with an induction into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.
