From breakdancing on California streets to voicing iconic animated legends
In short: Born in Pittsburg, California, in 1975, Dante Basco transitioned from a teenage breakdancer into a versatile performer. Best known for portraying the head of the Lost Boys in a 1991 blockbuster and voicing a fire-bending prince, his career spans live-action cinema, voice acting, and the founding of a prominent poetry venue.
Basco's trajectory began in the mid-1980s when he and his brothers performed as street breakdancers. After graduating from the Orange County High School of the Arts in 1993, where he studied alongside Pedro Pascal, he secured his breakout role as Rufio in the 1991 film Hook, directed by Steven Spielberg. This performance alongside Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman established his presence in Hollywood, a character he later revisited in the 2017 Kickstarter-funded short film Bangarang.
Beyond live-action, Basco became a prolific voice actor, lending his talents to characters like the title role in American Dragon: Jake Long and Prince Zuko in the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. His vocal work extends across various franchises, including roles in Star Wars Rebels, The Boondocks, and The Legend of Korra, where he voiced General Iroh II. His contributions also span the gaming industry, with voice credits in titles such as Mortal Kombat X, the Skate series, and the Call of Juarez series.
Outside of performance, Basco has been a significant figure in the arts community, co-founding the Hollywood spoken word venue Da Poetry Lounge in 1998. He has also expanded into podcasting, co-hosting the official Nickelodeon companion series Avatar: Braving the Elements since its 2021 premiere. His personal life has seen recent milestones, including his 2023 marriage to Alice Rehemutula and the birth of their son in 2024. He documented his professional journey in his memoir, From Rufio to Zuko.
