Why millions are romanticizing the melancholic, tweed-clad world of dark academia
In short: Dark academia is a digital subculture that idealizes higher education, classic literature, and Gothic architecture. Emerging on Tumblr in the mid-2010s, it exploded during the pandemic as a nostalgic, analogue-focused escape. It blends scholarly aesthetic with a moody, melancholic vibe, turning the act of reading into a curated, maximalist lifestyle.
At its core, dark academia is a reaction to the modern, corporatized university. While contemporary students often face neoliberal pressures, long hours, and financial instability, this aesthetic offers a fantasy of the ivory tower. It draws heavily from the 1930s and 1940s, favoring blazers, tweed, and Oxford shoes. The movement is deeply rooted in an idealized, pre-internet past, often centered on the imagery of elite institutions like Oxbridge or Ivy League schools. Its ur-text, Donna Tartt’s 1992 novel The Secret History, provides the blueprint: a lush, gothic world of classics students obsessed with the picturesque.
The subculture is inherently paradoxical. It owes its existence to the digital platforms of the 21st century—TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest—yet it remains emphatically analogue in its focus on physical books, candlelight, and handwritten poetry. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when physical campuses were shuttered, the aesthetic provided a sense of purpose and a virtual replacement for the lost university experience. It is often described as a 'melancholic offshoot' of the campus novel, blending elements of mystery, thriller, and philosophical pessimism.
However, the movement faces significant criticism regarding its exclusivity. Scholars like Sarah Burton and Amelia Horgan have pointed out that the aesthetic is often Eurocentric, elitist, and overwhelmingly white, favoring traditional canons over diverse voices. Critics argue it romanticizes unhealthy behaviors like sleep deprivation and substance misuse, while prioritizing the appearance of intellectualism over actual analysis. Despite these critiques, the movement continues to evolve, spawning offshoots like 'light academia' and 'green academia' as participants attempt to broaden the scope of what it means to be a scholar in a digital age.
