From Britpop drummer to Mars mission advocate and lawyer
In short: Dave Rowntree is best known as the drummer for Blur, but his career spans far beyond rock. From campaigning for space exploration to practicing law and entering politics, his diverse professional life reveals a man driven by deep curiosity and a commitment to social and scientific advancement.
Dave Rowntree's career is defined by a striking breadth of interests. While he achieved global fame as the drummer for the rock band Blur, he has simultaneously pursued careers as a computer animator, a solicitor, and a politician. In 2006, during a hiatus for Blur, he trained to become a solicitor and worked in the criminal department at the London law firm Kingsley Napley. Before his legal training, he worked as a computer programmer for the Colchester Borough Council. He also founded an animation company called Nanomation, which operated for eleven years.
His fascination with space led to a significant contribution to the Beagle 2 Mars mission. In 1998, Rowntree and Blur member Alex James began promoting the project to attract financial backing. This effort helped secure support from the UK Government and the European Space Agency (ESA). A signature tune composed by Blur was sent from Mars via the Mars Express mission launched in June 2003. The lander project originally required an estimated £25 million to succeed. This mission included a signature tune by Blur and a piece of art by Damien Hirst.
Beyond music and law, Rowntree has engaged deeply in political activism. Between 2017 and 2021, he acted as a Labour Party representative on the Norfolk County Council. Additionally, he contested the 2010 and 2024 general elections as a candidate for Labour. His diverse skill set is further evidenced by his work in computer graphics, where he has contributed to research papers on non-photorealistic rendering techniques. He is also a trustee for the charity Release, which advocates for public health-based drug policies. Furthermore, he holds a full pilot's licence and an amateur radio licence.
