Before he led the band Bread, David Gates was a prolific behind-the-scenes hitmaker.
In short: Long before David Gates became the voice of the 1970s soft-rock giants Bread, he was a versatile studio architect. From arranging hits for Glenn Yarbrough to producing Captain Beefheart, Gates spent the 1960s shaping the sound of others before his own songwriting dominance sparked internal band tensions and legal battles.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1940, David Gates was immersed in music from childhood. By high school, he was already performing alongside future stars like Leon Russell. After moving to Los Angeles in 1961, he established himself as a versatile industry professional, working as a music copyist, studio musician, and producer for artists ranging from Pat Boone to Elvis Presley. His early songwriting success included the 1964 hit 'Popsicles and Icicles' for The Murmaids, proving his knack for chart-topping melodies well before his own band's rise.
In 1969, Gates co-founded Bread with Jimmy Griffin and Robb Royer. The group achieved massive success, with seven consecutive albums reaching gold status in the United States. However, the band's internal dynamic was strained by Gates's overwhelming creative control; between 1970 and 1973, every one of the 11 Bread singles that charted on the Billboard Hot 100 was written and sung by him. This imbalance eventually led to the band's 1973 dissolution and later legal disputes over the use of the Bread name during a 1978 tour.
Following his time with Bread, Gates pursued a solo career, scoring a notable hit with 'Goodbye Girl' in 1978. Yet, his interests extended far beyond the recording studio. Using royalties from his musical success, he purchased a 1,400-acre cattle ranch in Northern California, where he focused on the ranching business throughout the 1980s. While he eventually returned to music and participated in a final Bread reunion in the mid-1990s, his legacy remains anchored in the enduring popularity of his compositions, which have been covered by legends like Frank Sinatra and reached the top of the UK charts through various artists.
