When a cosmic equation becomes a sentient, techno-organic zombie virus
In short: In the DC Universe, the Anti-Life Equation is a theoretical ultimate power. But on Earth 55, it mutated into a sentient virus that turned hundreds of millions of people into the Anti-Living. This wasn't just a plague; it was a hive-mind infection that forced heroes to make impossible, lethal choices.
The catastrophe began on Apokolips when the villain Darkseid attempted to merge two halves of the Anti-Life Equation. During the process, the Equation became corrupted, transforming into a techno-organic virus. It first infected Darkseid, who subsequently obliterated his own planet before the virus reached Earth. Upon arrival, it instantly infected hundreds of millions of people, creating a zombie-like state where victims were controlled by a collective hive mind.
The infection's reach was devastatingly broad. Iconic heroes like Batman, Nightwing, and Tim Drake fell to the virus, while others like Green Lantern and the Joker were infected simply by viewing corrupted screens. The virus proved resistant to conventional means; even Deathstroke's healing factor was only able to purge it under specific conditions. The narrative explores the moral decay of the apocalypse, where survivors were forced to use lethal force—such as Wonder Woman imbuing her sword with magic and kryptonite to fight an infected Superman.
The story explores various survival strategies across the globe. While some heroes attempted to build space arks or find magical sanctuaries, others sought refuge in a Gotham orphanage. There, villains like Deadshot and Cheetah spent three months training children in combat skills to survive the siege. Ultimately, the virus was revealed to be sentient, with the only known cure residing within the body of the hero Cyborg, who survived the initial outbreak but remained a primary target for the infected.
The event's impact was measured in both human and commercial scale. The first issue of the miniseries debuted in May 2019, ranking #1 in comic book sales for that period. By July 2019, the third issue reached #3 in sales, moving approximately 132,072 units. The series expanded into sequels like 'Hope at World's End' and 'War of the Undead Gods,' continuing to explore the fallout of the Anti-Living plague.
