In the Injustice comics, Superman transforms from a hero into a global dictator.
In short: After the Joker tricks Superman into killing his wife and destroying Metropolis, the Man of Steel abandons his moral code. He establishes the One Earth Regime, forcing global peace through violence. Batman leads an insurgency to stop him, sparking a five-year conflict that reshapes the entire DC universe.
The Injustice series, written by Tom Taylor and Brian Buccellato, serves as a prequel to the fighting game of the same name. The narrative spans five years, detailing the descent of Superman into totalitarianism. The catalyst is the Joker, who uses fear toxin and kryptonite to manipulate Superman into killing Lois Lane, whose heart was linked to a nuclear device that leveled Metropolis. Driven by grief, Superman kills the Joker and decides that all global violence must end, regardless of the cost.
This shift creates a deep rift within the Justice League. Batman forms an insurgency to oppose Superman's authoritarian methods, which include relocating Atlantis to the Sahara and using Kryptonian technology to create an enhanced security force. The conflict escalates as both sides recruit allies, including magical entities, Greek gods, and intergalactic forces like the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps. The struggle is marked by significant casualties, including the deaths of Green Arrow, Nightwing, and various members of the Justice League.
By the fifth year, the war reaches a breaking point. Batman's resistance attempts to bring in alternate versions of the Justice League from a different reality to challenge the Regime. This desperate maneuver sets the stage for the events of the video game. The series explores themes of power, morality, and the consequences of absolute authority, as characters like Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor navigate shifting loyalties in a world where the line between hero and villain has been permanently blurred.
