When the DC Universe faced its end, the villain Darkseid actually won the day
In short: In the 2008 crossover event Final Crisis, the villain Darkseid successfully overthrows reality, plunging the DC Universe into a state of total collapse. As the world falls under the control of the Anti-Life Equation, heroes are forced to confront the death of their civilization and the end of all things.
Conceived by writer Grant Morrison, Final Crisis was designed as a thematic successor to earlier projects like Seven Soldiers and 52. Morrison drew inspiration from the pervasive sense of instability and loss of faith felt in the Western world following the September 11 attacks. The narrative centers on Darkseid, who, after a final battle involving the New Gods, falls through time and manifests within a human host. This descent sunders reality, creating a singularity that threatens to consume all of space and time.
The conflict escalates as Darkseid’s agent, Libra, gathers an army of super-villains to execute the opening salvo: the murder of Martian Manhunter. Soon after, the Anti-Life Equation is broadcast across Earth, enslaving the population and transforming super-powered individuals into a military force known as Justifiers. As the fabric of existence breaks down, the heroes find themselves fighting not just for their world, but against the encroaching void. Even the death of Batman, who is struck by Darkseid’s Omega Beams, serves as a pivotal moment in the god’s attempt to claim final victory.
The resolution of the crisis involves a desperate struggle at the end of creation. Superman, left alone in the darkness, utilizes a wish-granting Miracle Machine to summon an army of Supermen from across the multiverse. This act of hope, combined with the efforts of Nix Uotan and the Green Lantern Corps, leads to the defeat of the Dark Monitor, Mandrakk. Ultimately, the story concludes with a wish for a happy ending, though the aftermath leaves the DC Universe permanently altered, with various characters and realities merged in the wake of the cataclysm.
