The actor who made more money from oil wells than from Hollywood fame
In short: Denver Pyle was a familiar face in American television, playing gruff father figures and authority types for decades. Yet, his most lucrative career move happened off-screen. By investing in aging oil wells during a market slump, he quietly built a fortune that dwarfed his lifetime earnings as a working actor.
Born in 1920 in Bethune, Colorado, Denver Pyle spent his early years working in the oil fields of Oklahoma and Texas before finding his way to Hollywood. While he became a staple of mid-century television, appearing in series like The Andy Griffith Show, Gunsmoke, and The Dukes of Hazzard, his financial security was rooted in a different industry. Following his time on The Andy Griffith Show, Pyle began purchasing oil wells that were considered near the end of their productive lives. At the time, oil prices were as low as $2.15 per barrel.
His strategy proved remarkably prescient. As new extraction technologies emerged and the 1973 oil crisis sent prices soaring to over $46 per barrel, the once-marginal wells became highly profitable assets. By 1981, Pyle had accumulated significant wealth, noting that his acting career had effectively become a way to fund his oil speculation rather than his primary source of income. Despite his success, he continued to work in television, citing his genuine enjoyment of the craft and the steady cash flow it provided for his investments.
Pyle’s career spanned a vast array of roles, from the Texas Ranger Frank Hamer in the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde to the patriarch Uncle Jesse in The Dukes of Hazzard. Beyond his professional life, he was known for his philanthropic efforts, including sponsoring a fishing tournament in Lamar County, Texas, which raised over $160,000 for children's programs over its first decade. He passed away from lung cancer in 1997, leaving behind a legacy that balanced the ephemeral nature of television stardom with the enduring, if unexpected, success of his private business ventures.
