In short: Founded in 1928 as the Portsmouth Spartans, the Detroit Lions are a cornerstone of NFL history. Despite winning four championships between 1935 and 1957, the franchise holds a unique, difficult distinction: they are the only team that has been active throughout the entire Super Bowl era without ever appearing in one.

The franchise relocated from Portsmouth, Ohio, to Detroit in 1934, adopting the Lions name to mirror the city's Major League Baseball team, the Tigers. Their iconic Honolulu blue and silver color scheme was chosen by the wife of player Glenn Presnell, inspired by the ocean waves off Hawaii. While their visual identity has remained largely consistent, the team has navigated various aesthetic shifts, including a brief, unpopular experiment with scarlet and black uniforms under coach Bo McMillin between 1948 and 1950.

The team's relationship with its home city has been complex, particularly regarding broadcast accessibility. During the late 2000s, a period marked by poor on-field performance and severe regional economic downturns, the Lions faced multiple local television blackouts because ticket sales failed to meet NFL requirements. These blackouts were a stark contrast to the team's long-standing tradition of hosting Thanksgiving Day games, a practice initiated by owner George A. Richards in 1934 to secure national radio exposure.

On the field, the Lions have endured long droughts, failing to win a single playoff game between 1957 and 1991, and again between 1991 and 2023. Despite these struggles, the organization has maintained deep ties to its history, honoring legendary players and celebrating milestone seasons with commemorative patches and throwback uniforms. Under current leadership, including head coach Dan Campbell, the team continues to refine its identity, recently removing black from its primary color palette before reintroducing it as an alternate aesthetic choice.
