How a 1950s Greaser Persona Defined a Short-Lived but Decorated Wrestling Tag Team
In short: Before they were Deuce 'n Domino, they were The Throwbacks, a greaser-inspired duo navigating the intense world of professional wrestling. From their developmental roots in Ohio Valley Wrestling to their WWE championship run, this team leveraged a retro aesthetic to capture gold before their eventual, dramatic dissolution in 2008.
Formed in early 2006, the partnership of Deuce Shade and Dice Domino began in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), WWE's developmental territory. Initially managed by Domino's storyline sister, Cherry Pie, the duo adopted a 1950s greaser persona. They rebranded as The Untouchables, a name that signaled their rising status as they secured the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship three times and the Deep South Wrestling Tag Team Championship once.
The team transitioned to WWE's SmackDown! roster in January 2007, officially becoming Deuce 'n Domino with their manager, Cherry. Their aesthetic remained consistent, complete with a 1950s-era car for their ring entrance. Their peak came on April 20, 2007, when they defeated Paul London and Brian Kendrick to claim the WWE Tag Team Championship. They successfully defended this title against various challengers, including a notable victory over Sgt. Slaughter and Jimmy Snuka at Vengeance: Night of Champions in June 2007.
The partnership began to fracture by 2008. After replacing Cherry with Maryse in May, the team suffered a string of losses. The end arrived on June 20, 2008, when Deuce attacked Domino following a defeat against Jesse and Festus. Deuce was subsequently drafted to the Raw brand, where he became Sim Snuka, while Domino was relegated to an enhancement role. By August 2008, Domino and Cherry were released from their contracts, with Deuce following a year later. Despite this, the trio reunited in 2021 to accept bookings on the independent circuit.
The legacy of the team is marked by their distinct character work and their ability to hold titles across multiple promotions. While their time in the WWE spotlight was brief, their transition from developmental prospects to champions highlights the scripted nature of their rivalries and the volatile, often short-lived, dynamics of professional wrestling partnerships.
