In short: Following the tragic death of his wife, Rita, Dexter Morgan finds himself navigating grief and a new, dangerous partnership. He encounters Lumen Pierce, a survivor of a brutal assault, and becomes her unlikely mentor in vengeance. As their dark alliance deepens, Dexter confronts the possibility of his own humanity.

Premiering on September 26, 2010, the fifth season of Dexter explores the aftermath of the fourth season finale, where Dexter’s connection to the Trinity Killer, Arthur Mitchell, resulted in Rita’s death. Dexter is left to manage his life as a single father to Harrison while dealing with the suspicion of his colleague, Joey Quinn. Quinn, skeptical of Dexter’s unemotional reaction to the tragedy, begins a private investigation into Dexter’s true nature, eventually hiring the disgraced cop Stan Liddy to gather evidence.

The narrative shifts when Dexter encounters Lumen Pierce, a woman held captive by a sanitation worker named Boyd Fowler. After Dexter kills Fowler, he discovers Lumen, who reveals she was tortured by a group of men led by motivational speaker Jordan Chase. Dexter reluctantly agrees to help Lumen hunt her attackers, recognizing her drive for revenge as a reflection of his own 'Dark Passenger.' This partnership serves as a form of atonement for Dexter, who feels responsible for his inability to save Rita.

The season culminates in a tense confrontation involving Jordan Chase, Liddy, and the Miami Metro police. Liddy, having captured photographic and video evidence of Dexter and Lumen, is killed by Dexter before he can expose them. Ultimately, Lumen kills Chase, and though Debra Morgan discovers them at the crime scene, she chooses to let them escape after sympathizing with the victim. With her need for violence satisfied, Lumen departs, leaving Dexter to reflect on his capacity for genuine human connection as he celebrates Harrison’s first birthday.
