In short: For decades, the profound bond between Destiny and Mystique existed only in the subtext of X-Men comics. Hidden by censorship and editorial restrictions, their true identity as a queer power couple and the biological parents of Nightcrawler was a secret held by creators long before it became canon.

Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, the character Destiny first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #141 in late 1980. While she was initially presented as an adversary and a member of the Brotherhood of Mutants, her true connection to Mystique was much deeper. As early as 1981, Claremont intended for the two to be lovers and the biological parents of the mutant Nightcrawler, with Mystique using her shapeshability to take a male form for conception. However, the Comics Code Authority and Marvel's own policies at the time prohibited the explicit portrayal of such characters, forcing their relationship into the shadows.

The character of Irene Adler, Destiny's civilian identity, carries a complex lineage. Recent storylines have established her as the same Irene Adler from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, even revealing that the detective 'Sherlock' was actually Mystique in disguise. This connection adds a layer of literary depth to her precognitive abilities. Born into wealth in late 19th-century Salzburg, Austria, Irene spent thirteen months recording prophecies in her 'Books of Truth' during her adolescence. This intense period of foresight eventually left her physically blind, though she learned to navigate the world by seeing future probabilities.

The narrative arc of these characters has moved from tragedy to resurrection. After being killed by Legion in 1989, Destiny was brought back during the 2021 'Krakoan Age.' This era allowed Marvel to finally codify the long-intended history, including the 2024 depiction of a female same-sex wedding between the two. Beyond their romance, the characters' impact is felt through their shared history of raising the mutant Rogue and their pivotal roles in the future of mutantkind, transforming them from mere villains into essential architects of their species' survival.
