The controversial book that fractured the legendary Hart wrestling dynasty
In short: Diana Hart's memoir, Under the Mat, promised to reveal the secrets of her famous family. Instead, it ignited a bitter legal and personal feud that saw the book pulled from shelves and left her siblings questioning the truth of her words.
Diana Hart published the contentious title Under the Mat: Inside Wrestling's Greatest Family after her younger brother, Owen Hart, died during a wrestling mishap. The text aimed to discuss alleged secrets within the Hart family, but the publication triggered an immediate backlash. Owen's widow, Martha, intended to sue Hart over the content, which resulted in the book being removed from publication.
The fallout created a deep rift within the family. Diana Hart later claimed that the stories printed in the book were twisted and changed from her original writing, expressing deep hurt over the controversy. However, her brother Bret Hart has questioned whether she was actually unaware of the book's specific content before it went to print.
Despite the friction caused by the memoir, Diana has continued her writing career through a different lens. In 2015, she announced plans for a romance novel trilogy titled Cauliflower Heart. The series, which revolves around a woman born into a wrestling family, includes titles such as Cauliflower Heart: A Romantic Wrestler, released in 2014, and Cauliflower Heart: She Who Laughs Last, released in February 2017.
Beyond her writing, Diana Hart's life has been deeply intertwined with the professional wrestling industry. She has appeared in various documentaries, including Queen of Harts: The Diana Hart Story, and has worked in promotional roles and gym training for younger students. Born to Stu and Helen, she was the penultimate child and the youngest daughter of the promoter.
