From child star to tennis pro and poker voice: the life of Vincent Van Patten
In short: Vincent Van Patten has lived several lives in the public eye. Starting as a prolific child actor in the 1970s, he pivoted to professional tennis, reaching a world ranking of 26. Today, he is best known as the long-standing commentator for the World Poker Tour, blending Hollywood connections with competitive grit.
Born in 1957 to actor Dick Van Patten, Vincent was pushed into show business at age nine. By the 1970s, he was a fixture on American television, guest-starring in over three dozen series ranging from Bonanza to Wonder Woman. His film career included the cult classic Rock 'n' Roll High School in 1978 and various roles throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He later expanded his creative output by writing and producing projects like the 2019 film 7 Days to Vegas, which dramatized a real-life 1995 bet where he attempted to walk 280 miles from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in one week.
Parallel to his acting, Van Patten pursued professional tennis. His breakthrough arrived in 1979 when he earned the Association of Tennis Professionals Rookie of the Year award. His competitive peak occurred in 1981 at the Seiko World Super Tennis tournament in Tokyo, where he defeated top-ten players, including John McEnroe. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of world number 26 in February 1982 and reached the third round of the US Open twice and Wimbledon once. His doubles career saw him reach the French Open quarter-finals in 1981 and a peak ranking of world number 24 in 1986.
Van Patten’s transition into the world of professional poker was rooted in childhood lessons from his father. By the 1990s, he was hosting high-profile home games in Hollywood, attracting celebrities like Ben Affleck and Tobey Maguire. Since 2003, he has served as a commentator for the World Poker Tour, a role that has spanned multiple broadcast networks including the Travel Channel, Game Show Network, and Fox Sports. Beyond the booth, he has competed in major events, including the 2010 World Series of Poker, and co-authored a novel about Las Vegas poker titled The Picasso Flop.
