In short: In 1977, Mark Knopfler was an English teacher with a demo tape. A single radio play by a BBC DJ transformed his band, Dire Straits, from a pub rock outfit into a global phenomenon, eventually selling over 120 million records worldwide.

Formed in London in 1977, Dire Straits emerged from the pub rock scene with a stripped-down sound influenced by blues, jazz, and country. The original lineup featured Mark Knopfler, his brother David Knopfler, John Illsley, and drummer Pick Withers. Though they initially performed as the Café Racers, a name change occurred during rehearsals in a friend's kitchen, leading to the moniker Dire Straits.

The band's ascent began when DJ Charlie Gillett played their demo of "Sultans of Swing" on BBC Radio London. This exposure led to a contract with Vertigo Records and a self-titled 1978 debut. Their commercial peak arrived with the 1985 album Brothers in Arms, which became the first album to sell one million copies on CD and remains one of the most successful records in British history.

Despite their massive popularity, the band's history was marked by significant internal shifts. The Knopfler brothers' partnership ended during the recording of Making Movies in 1980, and drummer Pick Withers also departed. By the time the band permanently disbanded in June 1995, Mark Knopfler had transitioned into a solo career and film composer, famously refusing numerous reunion offers.

The band's legacy is cemented by staggering numbers: over 120 million records sold globally and a 1991–1992 world tour that sold 7.1 million tickets. Their influence spans from the Grammy-winning "Money for Nothing" to the 2018 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, marking them as one of the definitive rock acts of the 1980s.
