Disney Adventure is a massive, salvaged cruise ship with its own roller coaster at sea.
In short: Disney Cruise Line transformed a bankrupt, partially built vessel into the largest ship in its fleet. Now homeported in Singapore, the 208,108-ton Disney Adventure features seven themed neighborhoods, the first-ever roller coaster at sea, and a unique rotational dining system designed to turn the ship into the ultimate destination.
Originally commissioned in 2016 by Genting Hong Kong as the Global Dream, the vessel faced a turbulent path to completion. Following the financial collapse of Genting and its shipyard subsidiary MV Werften during the pandemic, Disney acquired the partially finished hull in 2022 for €40 million. While the initial valuation of the project reached €1 billion, Disney’s total investment for the conversion ultimately hit approximately US$1.8 billion. This strategic acquisition allowed the company to bypass years of construction time, though the conversion proved complex, requiring extensive structural modifications to pivot the ship from a gambling-focused design to a family-oriented model.
The resulting Disney Adventure is a marvel of maritime engineering, measuring 342.7 meters in length and boasting a gross tonnage of 208,108. It is the first four-funnelled passenger vessel since the RMS Aquitania retired in 1950, though two of its funnels are purely decorative. To accommodate its massive size, the ship utilizes azimuthing podded propulsion driven by six powerful engines. While designed for methanol fuel, the vessel currently operates on a blend of sustainable fuels, including hydrotreated vegetable oil, due to regional infrastructure limitations in Singapore.
Onboard, the ship functions as a self-contained world. Guests experience seven distinct neighborhoods, such as Marvel Landing, which houses the Ironcycle Test Run—a 250-meter roller coaster. Entertainment is central to the experience, featuring exclusive fireworks shows at sea and original stage productions. Because the ship operates on three- to four-night itineraries, Disney implemented a specialized rotational dining system. Guests are assigned to one of three districts, each containing two restaurants, ensuring a personalized service experience as they move through different venues each night. This unique operational model cements the ship's status as a destination in its own right, rather than a traditional cruise vessel.
The ship officially entered service on March 10, 2026, following a christening ceremony led by Robert Downey Jr. It represents a significant milestone for Disney Cruise Line, serving as its first vessel permanently based outside the United States. By repurposing a stalled project, Disney successfully created a record-breaking ship that is 45% larger than its previous flagship class, demonstrating a unique approach to fleet expansion in the modern cruise industry.
