The hidden history of the Dom, often mistaken for the Romani people
In short: Though they share an Indian origin with the Romani, the Dom are a distinct ethnic group. Scattered across the Middle East and North Africa, they navigate a complex existence, often concealing their identity to escape social marginalization and deep-seated prejudice in the regions where they reside.
The Dom, or Domi, are an Indo-Aryan ethnic group whose origins trace back to the Indian subcontinent. While they are frequently conflated with the Romani people, linguistic studies of the Domari language reveal that the two groups departed India via different routes and at different times. This distinction is vital to understanding their unique cultural heritage, which is expressed through a rich oral tradition of music, poetry, and dance.
Historically, the Dom were nomadic, practicing trades such as blacksmithing, horse trading, and animal healing. However, over the last century, the community has largely transitioned to a sedentary lifestyle. Today, an estimated 1.4 million Dom live across a vast geography, including Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. In many areas, such as Jordan and Syria, they face significant social marginalization. In Jordan, where they are known as Bani Murra, some individuals may hide their ethnic identity to avoid the anti-Romani sentiment prevalent in Arab societies.
The social challenges facing the Dom are profound. In Syria, they often navigate life with precarious housing and limited access to government services, sometimes lacking the official documentation required for healthcare or legal employment. In Iraq, some members of the minority find themselves stateless. Despite these hardships and the poverty that affects many families, the Dom maintain strong community bonds through traditions of hospitality and a distinctive cuisine that blends influences from Arab and Palestinian culinary styles.
