From living in a U-Haul to becoming a Green Bay Packers legend
In short: Donald Driver’s journey from a childhood of extreme instability to NFL stardom is defined by resilience. After spending his early teens in motels and vehicles, he transformed his life through athletics. Today, he is remembered not just for his record-breaking football career, but for his extensive philanthropic and community work.
Born in 1975 in Houston, Texas, Driver faced significant adversity during his youth. Following his parents' divorce, his family experienced periods of homelessness, including living out of a U-Haul truck. During these difficult years, he and his brother resorted to illicit activities to survive. His life trajectory shifted at age 14 when he moved in with his grandmother, Betty Lofton, providing the stability he needed to focus on his athletic talents.
Driver excelled as a multi-sport athlete at Milby High School and later at Alcorn State University, where he was a five-time conference athlete of the year. Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1999, he spent his entire 14-season career with the franchise. He eventually became the team's all-time leader in both receptions and receiving yards, playing a pivotal role in their Super Bowl XLV victory. His consistency and athleticism were hallmarks of his tenure, earning him multiple Pro Bowl selections.
Beyond the gridiron, Driver has maintained a high profile through diverse ventures. He won the 14th season of Dancing with the Stars in 2012 and has authored several children's books and a memoir. His commitment to service is anchored by the Donald Driver Foundation, which he established with his wife, Betina, in 2001. The foundation supports homeless families and children with medical expenses, and his Driven to Achieve Awards have distributed over $1 million to various recipients since 2014.
Driver remains deeply connected to Wisconsin, where he serves as a representative for the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in Milwaukee. His legacy in Green Bay is cemented by a public retirement ceremony—the first of its kind for a Packers player—and a street renamed in his honor. Whether through his charitable contributions or his ongoing business interests, Driver continues to leverage his platform to foster community development in both Wisconsin and his home state of Texas.
