The voting machine company caught in a storm of conspiracy theories
In short: In the wake of the 2020 US presidential election, Dominion Voting Systems became the center of unfounded claims alleging an international cabal had stolen the vote. While these theories were debunked by hand recounts and experts, the controversy triggered massive legal battles and shifted the company's ownership.
Dominion Voting Systems, founded in 2002 by John Poulos and James Hoover, provides electronic voting hardware and software across North America and beyond. Their technology includes optical scanning devices for paper ballots and accessible ballot-marking machines like the ImageCast X, which features a 19-inch screen and audio capabilities in up to ten languages. While the company has a significant presence in Canada—supporting municipal elections and major party leadership contests—it has also faced scrutiny in the United States.
The 2020 US presidential election brought intense scrutiny to Dominion when Donald Trump and his surrogates promoted conspiracy theories alleging the machines transferred millions of votes from Trump to Joe Biden. However, hand recounts in swing states like Georgia and Wisconsin proved the machines had accurately tabulated the votes, attributing any discrepancies to human error rather than systemic fraud. These claims were further discredited by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and election technology experts.
The fallout from these allegations led to significant legal consequences. Dominion filed multi-billion dollar defamation lawsuits against figures such as Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, as well as media outlets like Fox News. In April 2023, Fox News settled one such lawsuit for $787.5 million. Following these events, the company's future appeared uncertain, with CEO John Poulos noting in 2023 that the company might struggle to remain in business. However, in 2025, the company was purchased by Scott Leiendecker under a new entity called Liberty Vote.
