In short: Formed in 1978, Dokken became a staple of the hair metal era, selling over 10 million albums worldwide. Yet, the band’s history is defined as much by its melodic hits as by the volatile, decades-long creative and personal rifts between founder Don Dokken and lead guitarist George Lynch.

The band's trajectory began in Los Angeles, where Don Dokken transitioned from his earlier project, Airborn, to form Dokken. After recording early material in Germany with producer Michael Wagener, the group secured a deal with Carrere Records for their 1981 debut, Breaking the Chains. While they found immediate traction in Europe, American commercial success arrived later with the 1984 release of Tooth and Nail, which sold over one million copies in the U.S. alone. By the late 1980s, the band reached a creative peak with the platinum-selling Back for the Attack, featuring the hit "Dream Warriors."

Despite this momentum, the band fractured in 1989 due to deep-seated tensions between Don Dokken and George Lynch. These conflicts, which Don later attributed to both creative differences and a publicity stunt that spiraled into genuine belief, led to multiple breakups and reunions. Even when the classic lineup—Don, Lynch, bassist Jeff Pilson, and drummer Mick Brown—reunited for projects like 1995's Dysfunctional, the underlying friction often resurfaced. Lynch's departure in 1997 and subsequent legal battles further complicated the band's stability, leading to a revolving door of personnel.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Dokken continued to tour and release albums, including Lightning Strikes Again and Heaven Comes Down, often relying on a shifting roster of musicians. While a brief 2016 reunion of the classic lineup offered fans a nostalgic moment, Don Dokken has maintained that such events were one-time occurrences. As of 2025, with Mick Brown retired and Don Dokken hinting at his own potential retirement, the band's legacy remains anchored in their signature melodic heavy metal sound and a history marked by both high-charting success and persistent internal volatility.
