How a surrealist YouTube nightmare evolved into a critically acclaimed British television series
In short: What began as a six-part internet art project morphed into a grotesque, puppet-led television phenomenon. By blending dark humor with the aesthetic of vintage children's programming, the series explores unsettling themes through manipulative teachers. Despite a scrapped pilot and production hurdles, the show remains a masterclass in modern, surrealist horror.
Created by Joe Pelling, Becky Sloan, and Baker Terry, Don't Hug Me I'm Scared originated as a YouTube art project between 2011 and 2016. The transition to television was complex; an initial long-form pilot produced in 2018 was ultimately scrapped. The creators felt this version lacked the claustrophobic, timeless quality of their original web series, and they later confirmed legal restrictions prevent the full release of that unaired footage. By July 2020, Channel 4 picked up a new iteration of the project, which officially premiered on 23 September 2022 after a brief postponement following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The series follows three central characters—Red Guy, Yellow Guy, and Duck—as they endure lessons from manipulative, malicious teachers on topics ranging from death to electronics. Each episode typically descends into gruesome absurdity, with the teachers meeting fatal ends while the trio fails to retain any meaningful knowledge. Critics have lauded this structure for its ability to capture the anxieties of the modern world. Reviews from publications like The Guardian and Bleeding Cool highlighted the show's unique blend of charm and horror, with many outlets naming it among the best television of 2022.
Following its broadcast success, the creators expanded accessibility for the series. On 6 December 2024, the show became available for international purchase via their official website, and by 23 February 2026, it was announced that the series would join the streaming service Dropout. While the creators have stated there are no current plans for a second season, they remain open to producing further self-funded content. The project stands as a notable example of internet-native creators successfully translating niche, surrealist shock humor into a polished, full-fledged television format that retains its original, unsettling edge.
