How a railway worker's match ended in a historic 203-minute stalemate
In short: In 1879, a fitter named Albert Jenkins gathered friends for a match that ended in a draw. After a post-game discussion at a local pub, they decided to play more and founded Doncaster Rovers. Since then, the club has survived liquidations, arson, and the longest competitive football match in history.
The club's origins are rooted in the industrial heart of South Yorkshire. Founded in 1879 by Albert Jenkins, a fitter at the Great Northern Railway works, the team's identity was solidified during a rest at the Hall Cross following a 4–4 draw against the Yorkshire Institute for the Deaf. This early period set the stage for a century of dramatic shifts, including a period of voluntary liquidation in August 1914 due to mounting debts, and a subsequent re-formation as a limited company in 1919.
One of the most extraordinary moments in football history occurred on 30 March 1946, during a Division Three North cup tie against Stockport County. After 90 minutes and two 10-minute extra-time periods, the score remained 2–2. Under the rules of the era, the match continued until a goal was scored. The game finally ended after 203 minutes of play as darkness fell, forcing spectators to return after tea to see the conclusion.
The club's modern era has been defined by extreme volatility. In the late 1990s, shareholder Ken Richardson's failed attempts to secure a new stadium led to him hiring men to set fire to the Belle Vue ground. This chaos contributed to the club's relegation into non-League football in 1998. However, the Westferry Consortium's takeover revitalized the club, leading to a period of significant success, including a League One title in 2012–13 and a return to the Championship in 2008.
Today, Doncaster Rovers competes in EFL League One. Having moved from Belle Vue to the Club Doncaster Sports Village in 2007, the club maintains its traditional red and white hoop home strip, a design used in various forms since 2001.
