From Michigan wrestling champion to UFC's lightweight division contender
In short: Drakkar Klose’s journey to the octagon was marked by sudden shifts, from a standout wrestling career in Michigan to a relocation to Arizona. After navigating collegiate setbacks and various injury-induced cancellations, he has established himself as a resilient force in the UFC's lightweight division.
Born in South Haven, Michigan, on March 9, 1988, Klose was raised alongside six siblings. His athletic foundation was built through a standout wrestling career at South Haven High School, where he secured a state championship in 2005. After excelling in high school, he played for North Idaho College and then joined Lindenwood University for his junior year. He relocated to Arizona to pursue mixed martial arts following his expulsion from college.
Klose's professional ascent began with an amateur record of 7–0. Before entering the UFC, he amassed a professional record of 7–0–1 across organizations like the Resurrection Fighting Alliance and World Fighting Federation. He made his UFC promotional debut on January 15, 2017, defeating Devin Powell via unanimous decision. His early UFC tenure included a split decision victory over Marc Diakiese at The Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale on July 7, 2017.
The path has not been without significant interruptions. A 2021 match against Jai Herbert was called off because a member of Klose's corner tested positive for COVID-19. Later that year, a bout with Jeremy Stephens was abandoned after a weigh-in shove caused Klose a spinal injury. Although the match never took place, Klose reportedly earned his compliance pay and show money. He has since earned two Performance of the Night awards, specifically for his victories over Brandon Jenkins and Joe Solecki.
Klose's recent career has seen him navigate high-stakes matchups, including a unanimous decision win over Edson Barboza on August 16, 2025, at UFC 319. His career has also been defined by personal milestones, including the birth of his son, Kingston, in 2018.
