In short: Formed in 1985 by three students, Dream Theater transformed from a local act named Majesty into a progressive metal institution. With sixteen studio albums and over 12 million records sold worldwide, the band has navigated complex lineup changes, Grammy-winning success, and a decades-long journey that recently saw a founding member return.

The band originated in September 1985 when John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy met while studying at Berklee College of Music. Initially performing as Majesty, they eventually adopted the name Dream Theater before releasing their debut, When Dream and Day Unite, in 1989. The group experienced several early personnel shifts, including the departure of original vocalist Chris Collins and his successor, Charlie Dominici, before Canadian singer James LaBrie joined in 1991. His arrival coincided with the release of Images and Words, which remains their only RIAA gold-certified record, having moved more than 500,000 units in the United States.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the band maintained a prolific output, characterized by intricate concept albums and evolving keyboardists. Kevin Moore departed after 1994's Awake, leading to stints by Derek Sherinian and eventually Jordan Rudess, who joined in 1999. This era produced notable works like the murder-mystery concept album Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory and the 20th-anniversary release Score, which featured a 29-piece orchestra. The band's commercial footprint expanded significantly, reaching a total of 12 million records and DVDs sold globally.

The group faced a major transition in 2010 when founding drummer Mike Portnoy exited. Following an extensive search documented in The Spirit Carries On, Berklee professor Mike Mangini took over the drum kit. This period brought new accolades, including Grammy nominations for tracks like On the Backs of Angels and The Enemy Inside. Their 2021 release, A View from the Top of the World, finally secured the band their first Grammy Award for the single The Alien. In a significant turn of events, the band announced in October 2023 that Portnoy had officially rejoined the lineup, marking a full circle for the veteran ensemble.
