In short: From the struggle between good and evil to the mysterious gap between your thoughts and your brain, dualism has shaped human belief for millennia. But is this division a profound truth of the cosmos, or merely a failure to see the underlying unity of all things?

Dualism is a family of theories proposing that reality is divided into two irreducible, distinct principles. This can manifest as an antagonistic conflict, such as ethical dualism where good and evil battle for dominance, or as a complementary relationship, such as the Chinese doctrine of yin and yang. In the latter, the female, passive principle of yin and the male, active principle of yang are interdependent, inseparable forces that maintain cosmic balance.

One of the most enduring debates centers on mind-body dualism. Substance dualists, most famously René Descartes, argue that the mind and body are entirely different substances—the mind being a thinking, immaterial thing and the body being an extended, physical thing. This view allows for the possibility of a soul persisting after death. In contrast, property dualists suggest there is only one physical substance, but it possesses two distinct kinds of properties: physical and mental, the latter of which cannot be reduced to mere brain states.

Critics and monists challenge these divisions. Materialist monists argue that everything is fundamentally matter, meaning the mind is simply a byproduct of physical processes. This leads to the 'problem of interaction': if the mind and body are separate, how can a mental intention cause a physical movement without violating the laws of physics, such as the conservation of energy? While some propose 'interactionism' (a two-way causal street) or 'epiphenomenalism' (where the mind is a mere byproduct), others, like the occasionalists, suggested that God coordinates the apparent connection between the two realms.
