The complicated legacy of the man who played Screech Powers
In short: He was a child star synonymous with 1990s nostalgia, yet his life was marked by financial struggle, legal battles, and controversy. Beyond the iconic Bayside High character lay a complex journey through reality television, professional wrestling, and a memoir that many of his peers refused to accept.
Dustin Diamond was a central figure in the Saved by the Bell franchise, appearing in its various iterations from 1988 through 2000. Alongside Dennis Haskins, he was the only performer to appear in the first three shows, including the spin-offs Good Morning, Miss Bliss and The College Years. While he achieved global recognition as the lovable Samuel "Screech" Powers, his career following the series was a whirlwind of diverse, and sometimes polarizing, ventures.
Diamond's later years saw him navigate the worlds of reality TV and professional wrestling. He appeared on Celebrity Fit Club in 2007, where he engaged in notable conflicts with host Ant and trainer Harvey Walden IV. In the ring, he demonstrated surprising athleticism, securing a knockout victory in just 42 seconds during an NWA-TNA match in 2002. However, his public image was also complicated by a 2006 sex tape controversy—which he later claimed used a stunt double—and a 2009 memoir, Behind the Bell, which many colleagues disputed, alleging the book's scandalous claims were fabrications from a ghostwriter.
His personal life was equally turbulent. In 2001, Diamond filed for bankruptcy in California, later launching a T-shirt campaign in 2006 to prevent his home foreclosure. Legal troubles also surfaced in Wisconsin, where a 2014 altercation involving a switchblade led to a 2015 conviction for carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. Diamond passed away on February 1, 2021, at age 44, following a brief, aggressive battle with small-cell carcinoma of the lungs.
