How a massive IT merger navigated a decade of rapid corporate transformation
In short: Formed in 2017 from two industry giants, DXC Technology has spent its existence in constant flux. From aggressive acquisitions and strategic divestments to shifting leadership and index reclassifications, the company illustrates the volatile nature of modern global IT services as it continuously recalibrates its workforce and market focus.
DXC Technology emerged on April 3, 2017, as a result of a merger between Computer Sciences Corporation and the enterprise services division of Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Headquartered in Ashburn, Virginia, the firm began its journey with $25 billion in revenue and a massive global footprint of 170,000 employees. Almost immediately, the company initiated a strategy to streamline operations, including a plan to reduce its office presence in India and trim its total headcount by approximately 10,000 staff members.
The company’s history is defined by a cycle of restructuring and portfolio adjustment. In 2018, it spun off its public sector segment into a new entity called Perspecta Inc. and acquired several firms, including Molina Medicaid Solutions. By 2020, it divested its U.S. health and human services operations to Veritas Capital. These moves were accompanied by significant leadership changes; Mike Salvino served as CEO from 2019 until late 2023, when he was succeeded by Raul Fernandez in February 2024. During this period, the company also faced external interest, notably a $10 billion takeover proposal from Atos in 2021, which ultimately did not proceed.
Today, DXC maintains a presence in over 70 countries, with a workforce exceeding 125,000 people. While its market position has evolved—evidenced by its 2023 move from the S&P 500 to the S&P SmallCap 600—it continues to manage large-scale delivery engines, particularly in India. Beyond its core business, the company has pursued social initiatives like the Dandelion Program, which supports employment for individuals with autism, and maintains high-profile sponsorships in global sports, including partnerships with Manchester United and Scuderia Ferrari.
