Eclipso is the ancient, malevolent entity trapped within a shattered black diamond
In short: Originally a generic villain, Eclipso evolved into a primordial manifestation of divine wrath. This powerful entity possesses hosts through a cursed gem known as the Heart of Darkness, manipulating their darkest impulses to wage war against God, the Justice League, and the very fabric of human existence.
First appearing in House of Secrets #61 in August 1963, Eclipso was created by Bob Haney and Lee Elias. Initially, the character was a conventional villain tied to scientist Bruce Gordon, who transformed into Eclipso during eclipses after being wounded by a tribal sorcerer. This early iteration focused on hedonistic plots, but a 1992 retcon in the miniseries The Darkness Within transformed Eclipso into a megalomaniacal demon. It was revealed that Eclipso's true soul was bound within the Heart of Darkness, a giant black diamond shattered into 1,000 shards in London in 1891.
Eclipso's power set is vast, encompassing immortality, invulnerability, and the ability to manipulate weather and natural disasters. As a former Angel of Vengeance, he can communicate in an angelic language and wields a mystical sword. His possession capabilities have grown significantly over time; while he once required physical contact with a diamond shard to influence a host, later iterations allowed him to remotely corrupt and possess multiple individuals by amplifying their darker tendencies. He has targeted powerful beings like Superman and the Spectre, even absorbing the latter's abilities during a confrontation on the moon.
The entity's history is marked by complex cycles of imprisonment and return. Whether through the efforts of the Phantom Stranger, who once fused the shards back into the Heart of Darkness, or the interventions of heroes like the Justice League and the Suicide Squad, Eclipso is repeatedly sealed away. Despite his immense power, he remains bound by divine laws set by the Presence. His influence is often tied to the emotional state of his hosts, as seen in his manipulation of Jean Loring and Maxwell Lord, proving that his most dangerous weapon is the corruption of the human heart.
Beyond comics, Eclipso has appeared in various media, including the television show Stargirl and the Justice League animated series. In these versions, his origins and methods vary—ranging from the collective souls of an evil race called the Ophidians to a demonic entity seeking to destroy humanity. Regardless of the medium, Eclipso remains a persistent threat, defined by his eternal quest for revenge against God and his role as a dark mirror to the Spectre.
