In short: Scottish singer-songwriter Eddi Reader has navigated a career spanning post-punk backing vocals, chart-topping pop success, and a celebrated revival of Robert Burns' poetry. Beyond her music, she has become a vocal advocate for Scottish independence, a stance that has drawn both prestigious honours and intense public scrutiny.

Born in Glasgow in 1959, Eddi Reader began her musical path busking in Sauchiehall Street before finding work as a session vocalist in London. Her career reached a commercial zenith in 1988 with Fairground Attraction, whose single 'Perfect' hit number one in the UK. Despite this success, the band dissolved in 1989 following internal friction. Reader subsequently transitioned into a prolific solo career, releasing numerous albums and earning a Brit Award for Best Female Singer in 1994.

A significant pivot in her artistic output occurred in 2003, when she recorded an album of Robert Burns' works with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. This project sparked an international resurgence in interest regarding Scotland's national poet and led to her receiving an MBE in 2006. Her academic recognition is equally substantial; she has been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, the University of Stirling, and the University of Edinburgh.

Reader's public life has been marked by strong political convictions. As a prominent supporter of the Yes Scotland movement, she faced significant backlash during the 2013 independence referendum. This included public criticism of her views and a controversial newspaper report linking her family history to extremist groups, which she formally challenged through the Press Complaints Commission. Today, she continues to explore her heritage, including writing a book about her great-uncle Seamus Reader, who led the Scottish Brigade of the Irish Republican Brotherhood during the Irish War of Independence.
