The resourceful wrestler who turned personal struggles into a championship legacy
In short: He lived by the mantra "I Lie! I Cheat! I Steal!", a philosophy that defined his career. From the Mexican wrestling rings to the heights of WWE, Eddie Guerrero transformed real-life battles with addiction into a compelling narrative of redemption and triumph.
Born Eduardo Gory Guerrero Llanes in 1967, Eddie Guerrero was a product of a wrestling dynasty. The son of Gory Guerrero, he grew up in El Paso, Texas, and even wrestled during intermissions at his father's promotions as a boy. After an injury ended his collegiate wrestling career at New Mexico Highlands University, he moved to Mexico to train professionally, eventually finding fame in promotions like CMLL and AAA.
Guerrero's career was marked by both incredible versatility and intense personal hardship. In Japan, he achieved success under the persona "Black Tiger," even winning the Best of the Super Juniors tournament in 1996. In the United States, he became a mainstay in ECW, WCW, and the WWF. His persona, "Latino Heat," was characterized by a crafty, resourceful style. However, his path was often complicated by real-life struggles with alcoholism and painkillers, issues that were sometimes woven into his professional storylines.
His departure from WCW in 2000 was fueled by frustration with management, specifically regarding his lack of main-event opportunities. This tension famously involved an incident with WCW President Eric Bischoff, which Guerrero later described as a worked shoot. Despite the turbulence, his later years saw a massive resurgence. Between 2003 and 2005, he reached the peak of his career as a beloved 'face,' winning the WWE Championship at No Way Out 2004. His sudden death on November 13, 2005, left a profound void in the industry, leading to his posthumous induction into multiple Halls of Fame.
