In short: When WWE's Chad Gable debuted El Grande Americano, Mexican fans saw a mockery of their traditions. Yet, through a dramatic character handover and a high-stakes mask match, the gimmick transformed from a controversial gimmick into a celebrated figure praised by critics and fans alike.

The character of El Grande Americano, meaning "the Great American," began as a controversial experiment in March 2025. Originally portrayed by WWE wrestler Chad Gable, the gimmick was born from a storyline where Gable sought to master lucha libre. However, the portrayal faced significant criticism from Mexican audiences, who viewed Gable's version as a mockery of national wrestling traditions, especially since he did not speak Spanish.

The character's trajectory shifted in June 2025 when a legitimate rotator cuff injury sidelined Gable. Ludwig Kaiser took over the role, and his portrayal took a vastly different approach. Kaiser embraced Mexican culture, singing "Cielito Lindo" during his entrance, speaking fluent Spanish, and referencing icons like Pedro Infante and El Santo. He even adopted a billing from Tangamandapio, a nod to the character Jaimito from El Chavo del Ocho.

This shift in presentation turned the tide of public opinion. The rivalry between the two performers culminated in a Máscara contra Máscara match at Noche de Los Grandes on May 30, 2026. The match was a critical sensation, with journalist Dave Meltzer awarding it 5¾ stars and calling it one of the greatest match presentations ever. Following his victory, Kaiser became the current AAA Mega Champion, having defeated Dominik Mysterio on September 13 at Triplemanía 34.

The character's impact extended beyond the ring. A mural of El Grande Americano was painted in Monterrey, and the Noah Club composed a corrido in his honor. The cultural weight of the character was further evidenced when Kaiser's mask was auctioned for US$50,035 following the historic mask match.
