How a German wrestler reinvented himself as a masked Mexican luchador icon
In short: Marcel Barthel, known as Ludwig Kaiser in WWE, has navigated a complex career spanning German independent circuits to global stardom. After years as a stoic, arrogant heel, he underwent a radical transformation in 2025, adopting the masked persona of El Grande Americano and earning critical acclaim for his cultural reverence.
Born in Pinneberg in 1990, Marcel Barthel is a second-generation wrestler who began his career as Axel Dieter Jr. in the German promotion Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw). Trained by his father, Axel Dieter—a former child soldier who later served in the French Foreign Legion—Barthel established himself as a technical specialist. During his time in wXw, he became a two-time World Tag Team Champion alongside Da Mack and eventually captured the Unified World Wrestling Championship in 2016 while part of the Ringkampf stable.
Barthel signed with WWE in 2017, eventually joining the Imperium stable. As Ludwig Kaiser, he gained prominence on the main roster as a mouthpiece for Gunther. However, following a period of professional stagnation and the dissolution of Imperium, Barthel reinvented his career in 2025 by assuming the mantle of El Grande Americano after Chad Gable suffered an injury. Unlike his predecessor, whose portrayal was viewed as a mockery, Barthel infused the character with genuine respect for lucha libre traditions, including learning Spanish and incorporating Mexican cultural references.
This transition proved highly successful, particularly in Mexico, where he became a tecnico and formed the Los Americanos stable. His feud with the original El Grande Americano culminated in a mask-versus-mask match at Noche de Los Grandes, which received a 5.75-star rating from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter—the highest-rated match in WWE history. By September 2026, he secured his first world title, the AAA Mega Championship, at Triplemanía 34. Despite his professional triumphs, Barthel's personal life faced scrutiny in May 2026 following his arrest on a misdemeanor battery charge in Orlando, Florida.
