How a Mexican wrestler redefined the exótico persona to reach the top of the sport
In short: Mario González Lozano, known as Pimpinela Escarlata, transformed the exótico wrestling gimmick from a niche act into a championship-winning force. By blending effeminate performance with genuine athletic prowess, he shattered conservative expectations in Lucha Libre, becoming the first exótico in decades to capture a major Mexican title in 1996.
Born in 1969, González began his career in 1988 under the name Pantera Rosa. Inspired by legendary exóticos like Adorable Rubí, he adopted the persona of Pimpinela Escarlata, a name derived from the fictional character The Scarlet Pimpernel. His act involved wearing makeup and adopting effeminate mannerisms, a style that initially clashed with the conservative atmosphere of Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre. This friction led him to join the newly formed Lucha Libre AAA World Wide in 1992, where he found a more receptive environment for his unique brand of charisma.
Escarlata’s success challenged the traditional boundaries of Lucha Libre. In 1996, he defeated La Parka to secure the Mexican National Light Heavyweight Championship, marking the first time an exótico had held a major Mexican title since 1976. He continued to break barriers by forming Los Exoticos in 2000, the first all-exótico stable in AAA, and participating in innovative match formats like the eight-man madness match, which combined male, female, exótico, and mini-estrella wrestlers in a single contest.
His career is defined by both high-profile victories and intense rivalries. In 2011, he achieved a historic milestone by overcoming a field of seven female competitors to claim the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship. Despite facing jealousy from peers and enduring high-stakes hair-versus-hair matches, Escarlata remained a central figure in the industry for decades. His influence extended internationally, including appearances in Japan and a stint on Lucha Underground, cementing his legacy as one of the most successful and influential exótico wrestlers in history.
